The research team improved bone-growing capabilities on 3D-printed ceramic bone scaffolds by 30-45 percent when coated with curcumin, a compound found in spice turmeric. They have published their work in the journal,
Turmeric has been used in Asia for thousands of years and is a significant part of Ayurveda. Turmeric has been shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and bone-building capabilities.

According to Susmita Bose, Herman and Brita Lindholm Endowed Chair Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, “As a mother with a chemistry background, I realized I didn’t want my children to be exposed to so many chemicals for every illness,” Bose said. “I started looking at home remedies.”
She always emphasizes healthy living as the best way to guarantee health outcomes, including healthy eating, proper sleep, exciting hobbies, and exercise.

Bone scaffolds promote bone healing and regeneration in patients with bone defects. There has been growing interest in using 3D printing technology to create patient-specific bone scaffolds. These scaffolds can be designed to mimic the structure and composition of natural bone, making them an attractive option for bone repair.

Turmeric, a spice commonly used in Asian cuisine, has been found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These properties make it a promising candidate for bone healing and regeneration. In recent studies, turmeric has been incorporated into 3D-printed bone scaffolds to evaluate its potential to promote bone regeneration.

Results of these studies have shown that turmeric can improve the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of 3D-printed bone scaffolds. It has been observed that adding turmeric enhances the proliferation of bone cells and the deposition of calcium, which are essential factors in bone regeneration.

In addition, turmeric has been found to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, critical factors in developing bone diseases such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Using turmeric in 3D-printed bone scaffolds may provide a potential therapeutic option for patients suffering from these conditions.

Overall, using 3D-printed bone scaffolds incorporating turmeric shows promise in promoting bone healing and regeneration. However, further research is needed to fully understand this approach’s potential benefits and limitations and develop optimized turmeric-based bone scaffolds for clinical use.
