NASA are stepping straight into the future of textiles with their 4D printed ‘space fabric’—a metallic material intended to be used like ‘chain mail’ to protect astronauts and spacecraft alike during their missions.The material remains fold-able and retains the ability to change shape easily.

ACES researchers have turned their attention to the medical field of soft robotics, manufacturing a valve that actuates in response to its surrounding water’s temperature. ACES is the first group to combine printing a 4D device with four different cartridges simultaneously, while using tough gels with the incorporated actuating materials.

The fourth dimension is time, shape shifting in fact, and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES) at the University of Wollongong is helping to set the pace in the next revolution in additive manufacturing.

Futurecraft 4D printing

This is good news for flat feet and wide feet.

Carbon and Adidas are partners for production and manufacturing in the Futurecraft 4D.
They have developed the first additive manufacturing mass production footwear, making before impossible midsole geometries possible and paving the way for custom, high-performance shoes that meet each customer of the unique needs.
