Anderson said, “We all had a laugh at the idea, but then we realized it wasn’t that bad of an idea then he told figure out how to do it, to replicate identical rock twins many times over, the researchers laser-scan a single rock, capturing every wrinkle and grain, then feed the data into the 3-D printer and watch as the machine spits out one perfect copy after another, sometimes reproducing rocks no bigger than a quinoa bud, others the size of a Rubik’s Cube.

“The biggest challenge was having to carve out an entirely new research area that we hadn’t dabbled in before”.:)

Vader Systems create 3-D Printer For Printing with Liquid Metal

3-D printing liquid metal with Vader Systems



University of Buffalo student Zack Vader has created a machine that prints three-dimensional objects using liquid metal.

According to Professor Edward P. Furlani  of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Electrical Engineering departments of University at Buffalo, Vader’s process uses a magnetic field to manipulate conductive fluids.  The magnetic field is used to create pressure for squeezing the liquid out of an ejector nozzle.

According to Furlani “It’s a transformative technology.  It’s very exciting interdisciplinary engineering. I think its application base will continue to broaden and expand for the foreseeable future.”

According to Chi Zhou, Assistant Professor at University of Buffalo, “I can see at this stage that it can complement traditional metal printing, but later, maybe 10 years later, it can dominate the metal printing market because it can print better quality, cheaper and faster.”

Vader’s 3-D printer can be used in future for making custom knee and hip replacements.

A breakthrough idea five years ago by former University at Buffalo student Zack Vader, then 19, has created a machine that prints three-dimensional objects using liquid metal.

According to the Pitsco Education,” they provide science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) classroom solutions.  Afinia a 3D printer supplier has teamed with Pitsco to enable 3D printing in classrooms.  Pitsco provides 3-week courses that can be incorporated in any STEM curriculum.  They offer a vehicle engineering kit that allows students to 3D print vehicle parts. Another project comes with a free software called 123D Creat.  Students use the software to make objects such as medallions and game pieces.  Pitsco is further exploring ways to incorporate 3D printing into English and language arts, for example, by 3D printing characters and letting students write stories about the characters”.:)
