2023: Stress-Resistant Alloy
In collaboration with The Ohio State University and HX5 LLC, NASA has achieved a significant material science breakthrough by developing GRX-810, a 3D-Printed alloy with remarkable stress resistance, surpassing existing alloys by 600. As the demand for materials capable of enduring extreme conditions grows, previous research has shown that incorporating ceramic components into metal alloys enhances their resilience. However, the challenge lies in preventing the ceramic particles from floating to the surface during the alloy’s molten state. To overcome this obstacle, the research team employed a laser powder bed fusion 3D printing process, using nickel, cobalt, and chrome particles in ink combined with yttrium oxide powder. The ceramic particles were effectively infused throughout the alloy’s microstructure by printing alternating layers of metal alloy and powder particles and subjecting them to a laser heating approach known as oxide-dispersion strengthening.
