3D printed active materials for robots, inspiration from invertebrates.
According to Dr. Ed Habtour, ARL researcher who specializes in nonlinear structural dynamics and lead author Ghazaleh Haghiashtiani, “Current military robots have two major limitations that restrict them from mimicking the locomotion of biological organisms. Unlike current 3-D printed DEAs, the new fabrication method does not require post-processing steps, such as assembly, drying or annealing. With the new 3-D printing method, the Solider can take advantage of the unique actuation properties of soft DEAs at the fundamental materials level with microscale resolution and complexity, with minimal prior expertise.”
The combination of Artificial Intelligence and 3D Printers. The German engineering firm KUKA Robotics is prototyping a robotic arm that works with a MakerBot 3D printer to speed up the manufacture of robotic arms. Parts can be printed, retrieved and installed by a robot.
According to Asst Prof Pham from NTU’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, “We envisioned a team of robots which can be transported to a work site, print large pieces of concrete structures and then move on to the next project once the parts have been printed.
This research builds on the knowledge we have acquired from developing a robot to autonomously assemble. But this latest project is more complex in terms of planning, execution, and on a much larger scale.”
According to NASCAR Star Brad Keselowski, “I believe firmly in manufacturing, and I believe firmly that additive manufacturing is going to improve the human experience in a significant way. What that’s going to be is hard to say. Metal additive manufacturing, to me, I don’t want to oversell it, but it feels like the new Internet. It’s the technology that’s going to take us not just to space as we’ve been, but space like going to Mars. It’s the technology that’s going to make us live healthier and longer. If you look at some of the medical tools that are out there, they are made possible only by 3D printing out of metal”.
